Sayler Park Sustains

Sayler Park Sustains

Sayler Park Sustains is an annual, one day festival featuring local products, artisans, and music; with the intent to educate on and celebrate DIY sustainable practices in our daily lives. It took place at Nelson Sayler Memorial Park in the neighborhood of Sayler Park, Cincinnati, organized by Megan Ayers & Mike Oberst. All monies raised during this event went towards the community via green initiatives. There was face painting and puppets for the kiddo’s (among other activities) in addition to the great music and food. We met Beth Kindle, the brains behind Recyclabowls, where she uses recycled materials (including coax cable + possibly YOUR old sweaters) to make nifty bowls and pet beds. There was the Doughnut Spanker herself, Sarah Ouellette from North South Baking Co, merrily slinging cruffins and brownies to the masses; as well as Karen Blocher from Green Grrrl Wisdom (to whom the credit goes for my soft, slightly fragrant beard - with her homemade Marshmallow Root Shampoo Bar). In addition to the food trucks and various other local delicacies, the awesome folks from La Soupe were on site, dishing out complimentary paella by the bowlful to passersby and festival goers alike. La Soupe is a restaurant whose mission is to bridge the gap between food waste and food insecurity - check their website for instruction on how to volunteer. Adult beverages were served up by the good people from 13 Below Brewing and Second Sight Spirits. We picked up a couple of hand forged gardening tools from Will Dobkins of Homestead Iron out of Missouri (tryin’ to up my raised bed game). There were educational workshops throughout the day, with topics ranging from rainwater collection and backyard chicken keeping, to mushroom cultivation. The music started at noon with The Part-Time Gentlemen and lasted into the night with The Tillers and local hip hop group Triiibe. As a huge fan of the sustainability movement, I personally had a great time at this shindig & hope to see everyone there next year!
